Emily Contino
My work explores ideas of place, both mental and physical. I work instinctively, creating deeply personal expressions that draw parallels between nature, the complexity of human emotion, and resilience. This work is an excavation of the atmospheric limbo of memory, and these abstracted scenes have developed into an expressive refuge. By creating through paint I reference the timelessness of painting throughout art history and nod to my artistic influences, such as JMW Turner, Anselm Kiefer, Elly Smallwood and Christopher Volpe. By deconstructing the compositions, elements of landscape devolve from subject to suggestion, a connection to the intricate and inexplicable essence of becoming and unbecoming.
